Afghanistan will open their mission in South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship in Karachi on 7 December when they will play against last edition's runners-up Maldives, Pakistan Football Federation said on Friday.
Afghanistan are being bracketed in Group-A where they will also play against 1997 bronze-medalist Pakistan (9 Dec) and Sri Lanka (11 Dec).
The final of the 11-day event will be played on 17 December after two eagerly-awaited semi-finals on 14 December.
The biennial tournament, from 2003, has grown in stature with new entrants Bhutan and war-ravaged Afghanistan joining the pool of six regulars of the SAFF: Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
On their maiden appearance, Afghanistan finished seventh in 2003 edition at Dhaka in January 2003 losing to Sri Lanka (0-1), India (0-4) and Pakistan (0-1) in Group-A.
Iran, Germany and German Football Federation (DFB) are helping Afghans footballers, and now another German Klaus Staerk is looking after the team that will take part in Karachi's eight-nation event.
In addition to FIFA, which has been supporting football in Afghanistan since 2002 through its Goal and FAP Programs, the football associations of Germany, England and Iran have also provided ongoing help since 2003.
